Incapacitated whenever I get a migraine

My sensitivity to light and to sound is so intense whenever I get a migraine that I have only one option—I have to go to a dark QUIET room and sleep it off. That's it. Nothing else works.

Is anyone else like this? It makes so hard, my life goes on hold and I get nothing done, just sleep until it's passed.

Hi, I'm 37. I have suffered severe migraines since I was 6. I loose my vision, the power to one side of my body and become disorientated. Just to finish it off im left with a blinding headache. Sometimes they can last for 4 hours or 2 weeks with the symptoms happening on a loop. As ive got older they have got worse but seem to happen less frequently. It is seriously affecting my work and life. When I say im experiencing a migraine its met with the attitude " it's just a bad headache" I find as you do the best way to deal with it is to sleep. Sometimes it works better than others. Dark room, no sound, sleep.

I have exactly the same type of migraines. I'm still trying to figure out how to treat the migraines. I've had them for ten years. The next step the doctors told me would be botox. As of now I'm on the strongest medication. I get them daily. I understand what you go through.

In the uk too. Found sumatriptan had some weird side effects too. I'd recommend you try a few triptans to sew which one hopefully works for you. I've had luck with Rizatriptan which goes into your system very quickly as it melts on the tongue :)

Hi I'm mike 36 I get migraines and have suffered since I was 12, tried all the recommended meds from the docs and nothing seems to work, I seem to get them for several weeks consecutively and range from one to three migraines a day, I've recently been doing some deep breathing exercises which seems to help but most of all the best by far technique I've ever used is a cold compress on my shoulders I do this every time now when i get a trigger and I don't feel as much need to go to a quiet dark place, don't laugh but my compresses have ranged from paper towels, kitchen towels, flannels to socks (yes I said socks) lol when I've got a migraine i will do my best to get rid of it as meds take to long to work so i don't bother with them and I don't have to go through the nausea which is great.

Hi everyone, like I said l an 30 years old and I've been suffering for more then 20 years. Here is something that you should all try, but please try it for couple of weeks. Every night put one or two tablespoon on honey in a cup and add drinking water to the top and mix it well, put in next to u and go to sleep, wake up around 6 or 7 drink it and go back to bed for an hour or how ever much u want. Drink this every morning, not only it helps on migraine but also gives u soooo much energy. Take care

Lately I have been getting optical migraines and I know a big one is coming on. I go in a dark room, put an ice pack on my head and sleep. I take 50 mg of Paxil and it normally works. When I did imitrex if felt like my head was in a vice. Carol

I was prescribed imitrix and did not like the side effects. My Dr recently prescribed maxalt and it's working for now. The side effects are similar to imitrix but not as severe.

I can't take any triptans because of cardiac side effects and ergotamine caused my tongue to swell. This doesn't leave me with much. Too much Tylenol and Advil for sure. My doc won't listen to my suggestions so what else do I do. You. Can't shop around for a new doc in Canada!

Migraines can be such a hindrance to a productive day, i know how you feel. I'm new to this, just recently sought consult with my Pain Management Doctor/Neurologist and he prescribed me a Topamax 25mg OD every bedtime, Zomig 2.5mg as needed (max 4 doses per day). Hope this helps! :)

Yep I go through the same thing and do the same thing, It is hard because when you got things to do and when a migraine comes alone, depending how bad it is I can't do it and so my day falls behind and then I have to play catch up.

As soon as my sight starts to go I quickly make a carrot/celery and apple juice. Drink it down and go to bed, within half an hour I can get up again.. I have only a slight headache for the rest of the day, no tablets usually. Make sure you eat regularly, and eat all food groups. All the best.

Interesting and true. I discovered that food has an affect whilst at school.
One day I had a bad attack, I started going blind, my teacher at the time suggest that I eat something, and sit outside and rest. I forced myself to eat, and can you believe it, my sight was restored in less time to what was usual, and although I was still ill, I had noticed that in the long term my headache improved a lot earlier than usual.
Since then I tried many things and eventually found that if I had my vegetable juice it improved a great deal and it got rid of the blindness in half the time and the headache was not severe at all. It works on my children as well.
But it does not work on all types of migraines, it must depend on what causes it. In my case I believe my carbohydrate levels go too low and the juice seems to build it up quickly. But if I do not eat three proper meals in a day on a regular basis then the migraines will return. Stil, the juices do work. I suggest try it. ))

Suffered Migraines for years. Finally, 5 years ago, doctor prescribed Imitrex oral tablets. Cannot believe the difference. Instead of suffering for days, it meant only a couple of hours. Still had the day-after effects of thick-head and numbness in forehead for the next 24.

I call the day after a migraine "hangover."

  • Jenxoxo
    Jenxoxo September 11, 2010 at 6:44 pm

Yes, this is very normal for migraine sufferers. Many of us have light sensitivity, noise sensitivity and have to just sleep it off. You might also have visual disturbances like aura and you might need to vomit several times. The next day you might feel "off" as well and have trouble doing things like reading. All part of the fun of having a migraine (sarcasm noted).

I used to take the imitrex pills but after about 2 years they became ineffective. My doctor switched me to the injectable Imitrex and that's been working very well for me for a number of years. Nice thing about the injectable is that it works for me even if I don't do it at the very start.

I can't take imitrex it gives me chest pain. I'm stuck with Tylenol #3's and Robax and gravel and a whole lot of praying! Nothing works, sometimes they are tolerable, other times not. And them there are family members and coworkers who think you're faking!!! Gotta love that. Tired of all of it! Have trouble with pain control after surgeries now too since I'm codeine tolerant!

Have you tried zomig? I had tightness (maybe pain) from imitex. I guess i have a high pain tolerance, or so i am told. I still use the nasal imitrex. It only works if i take it within a couple of minutes of the migraine starting. I also use the zomig and think it works better. Plus no chest tightness. Wishing everyone no more headaches!
